A man took a store clerk hostage in a robbery attempt before surrendering to law enforcement officers, it was reported.
Officers from the Coachella Police Department responded to the 46100 block of Dillon on Monday July 23 at 9 p.m., in Coachella in reference to a suspicious person.
During the 911 call, the caller said there was a robbery in progress and the suspect had fired a handgun while inside the business.
Minutes later, officers arrived and learned an African-American adult had entered the store, pulled out a handgun, began firing shots and took a clerk hostage, Sgt. Ken Reichle reported.
The suspect, Carnell Anthony Jones, 23, from Lompoc surrendered to police and was immediately taken into custody.
Nobody was injured during the attempted robbery.
Thermal Station investigators assumed the investigation.
