The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department conducted the crosswalk crackdown between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of JFK Drive and La Brisis Way, near Armada Elementary School, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Lee Tainter.

He said a deputy wearing a gingerbread man outfit — for high visibility — was used to test whether drivers obeyed right-of-way rules.

According to the sergeant, five people failed to yield when the decoy stepped from the curb, resulting in citations.

One vehicle was impounded when deputies discovered the motorist was driving on a suspended or revoked license.

“Our goal is to make motorists more aware of their surroundings and to be vigilant while driving, especially near schools and crosswalks,” Tainter said.

Additional stings are planned between now and year’s end.
