The San Diego Padres today announced they have placed catcher Yasmani Grandal on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain and have selected catcher Eddy Rodriguez from Single-A Lake Elsinore. In addition, the club has transferred right-hander Anthony Bass to the 60-day disabled list. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.
Grandal, 23, has hit .312 (24-for-77) with five doubles, a triple, five home runs, 15 RBI and 14 runs scored in 24 games for the Padres this season, his first Big League campaign. The switch-hitter was recalled from Triple-A Tucson on June 30 for his second stint with San Diego. In 56 games for Tucson this year, he hit .335 (65-for-194) with 18 doubles, six home runs, 35 RBI, 40 runs scored and 37 walks against 35 strikeouts.
Rodriguez, 26, has hit .223 (73-for-328) with 13 doubles, 13 home runs, 36 RBI and 37 runs scored in 87 games for Single-A Lake Elsinore this season. The catcher was originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 20th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Miami.
Over parts of seven professional seasons in the Reds (2006-08) and Padres (2012) organizations and two seasons in the independent leagues (2009-10), he has hit .239 (408-for-1708) with 86 doubles, two triples, 58 home runs, 227 RBI and 207 runs scored in 488 games played.
Bass, 24, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 24, retroactive to June 21, with right shoulder inflammation. He made his first career Opening Day roster for the Padres this season. In 16 games, 14 starts, for San Diego this year, he has gone 2-7 with a 4.70 ERA (44 ER/84.1 IP) and 72 strikeouts against 33 walks.
The right-hander began the season with two relief outings before making his first start of the season on April 12. Bass made his Big League debut for the Padres last season and has gone 4-7 with a 3.60 ERA (53 ER/132.2 IP) and 96 strikeouts against 54 walks in 43 Big League games (17 starts) in his career.
