A 23-year-old Hemet man accused of grabbing a women’s purse in front of a market and running away was behind bars today, a police spokesman said.
The incident occurred about 4:45 p.m. Friday in front of the El Toro Market at 311 S. State St. in Hemet, said police Cpl. Frank Pitetti.
Gary Eugene Elliott allegedly grabbed the purse, and as the woman began screaming for help, ran into a nearby residential area, Pitetti said.
“Officers set up a perimeter and began searching the area,” Pitetti said. “The suspect was captured in the area of Walnut Street and Central
Avenue after a short foot pursuit.”
The woman was unhurt and police found and returned her purse, according to Pitetti.
Elliott was arrested and booked into the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta for suspicion of strong-armed robbery, jail records showed.
