The San Diego Air & Space Museum announced two grants this week that will pay for continuing efforts to post its collection of aviation-related material on the Internet.
The museum, which claims to hold the third-largest collection of aviation research material in the nation, received $124,500 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and $25,000 from Goodrich Aerostructures.
The museum’s digitization project began two years ago. The 135,000 images uploaded to Flickr.com since then have received about 7 million views, according to the museum.
The museum also has 400 videos on YouTube.
Despite the large numbers, the museum said its online photos and video account for only 5 percent of its collection.
Museum officials hope that converting the materials to digital versions will preserve the items.
