Santa Anita Park will play host to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships again next year, making it the host of the prestigious horseracing event two years in a row, organizers announced today.
Santa Anita will host this year’s Breeders’ Cup Nov. 2-3. Next year’s event is scheduled for Nov. 1-2, 2013.
“We are delighted to extend out partnership with Santa Anita, to celebrate the 30th edition of our Championships in Southern California and for the unprecedented opportunity to showcase the Breeders’ Cup Classic in prime time for a second consecutive year,” said Craig Fravel, president and CEO of the Breeders’ Cup. “We are equally looking forward to bringing racing fans a world-class event at one of the world’s greatest racing venues.”
This year’s Breeders’ Cup will mark the sixth time Santa Anita has hosted the race since 1986. In 2008 and 2009, the races set records forattendance and betting, according to Breeders’ Cup officials.
The Cup’s 15 races offer $25 million in prize money over two days, including the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, which will be broadcast live this year and next by NBC.
Race officials said the event generated more than $60 million for the Los Angeles area in both 2008 and 2009.
