Driver killed in Lake Elsinore crash identified

Updated @ 7 p.m.: The Riverside County Coroner’s office has released the name of the driver killed in a rollover crash today  in Lake Elsinore.

Canyon Lake resident Robert Kercheval, 81, was wearing a seat belt when he lost control of his vehicle, struck a wooden sign and careened over an embankment, the coroner’s report said.

Original: A fatal crash occurred on Friday Aug. 17 on Railroad Canyon Road just east of Grape Street, Cal Fire officials reported.

According to a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department report, the accident occurred just after 10 a.m. on Railroad Canyon Road between Canyon Hills and Church Road.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a 2006 grey Buick was traveling west on Railroad Canyon Road, lost control of the vehicle onto the soft dirt shoulder close to a thirty-foot drop,” the report said.

The driver was not able to correct the vehicle and plummeted down a steep slope coming to rest in a wooded ravine.

The motorist died at the scene.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with additional information is encouraged to call the Lake Elsinore Police Department at 951 245-3300.
