Fiery Temecula crash claims life of Riverside man

A Riverside man who died shortly after a fiery rollover crash in Temecula, despite being pulled from the wreckage by passers-by, was identified today.

Daniel Colon, 40, died at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta an hour after the crash, which occurred around 7:20 p.m. Thursday on southbound state Route 79, about a half-mile south of Los Caballos Road, according to the California Highway Patrol and Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

Colon’s Ford SUV veered off the road at a curve and when he tried to swerve back, the vehicle veered across the highway and flew into a riverbed, then struck a drainage tunnel, CHP Officer L.J. Vicino wrote in an accident report.

The SUV flipped over, trapping Colon, Vicino wrote.

“(The vehicle) caught fire but was extinguished by several passers-by who also pulled (Colon) from the fiery wreckage,” according to Vicino.
