San Diego: Investigation underway in death of infant at daycare facility

A medical examiner’s findings have led detectives to begin a homicide investigation into the death of a 11-month-old boy who lost consciousness at daycare facility in San Diego’s Clairemont Mesa West area, police said Friday.

Officers were sent to the facility in the 4300 block of Mt. Davis Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. on May 23 on a report of a child who was not breathing, said Lt. Ernie Herbert of the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit.

The daycare provider found Louis Oliver unresponsive and called 911, Herbert said.

Paramedics took the boy to Rady Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead the following morning, Herbert said.

The police department’s Child Abuse Unit conducted the initial investigation into the boy’s death, but the Homicide Unit took over the case after an autopsy was performed and the medical examiner determined the child died as a result of homicide, Herbert said.
