Suspected DUI driver hits pedestrian in Menifee

A suspected drunken driver who struck a pedestrian and a parked car, then allegedly attempted to flee the scene but was stopped by witnesses, was behind bars today.

Juan Vargas Mendoza, 31, of Bloomington was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury following the crash in the 31600 block of Brentworth Street in Menifee.

Mendoza was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta.

The suspect allegedly hit a 54-year-old Menifee woman when she momentarily stepped into the street about 7 p.m. and also plowed into a parked car, according to Riverside County sheriff’s officials.

Mendoza, who was described as disoriented, was restrained by passers-by immediately after the crash and held until deputies arrived, according to the sheriff’s department.

The pedestrian was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
