Cathedral City: Motorist flees police, tosses shotgun out the window

A sawed-off shotgun was thrown from a car fleeing police this morning, and the suspect or suspects were still at-large, a police sergeant said.

An officer saw a “suspicious vehicle” driving around the area of Rio Vista Drive in Cathedral City around 9:30 a.m. and called in more officers to investigate, Sgt. Scott Sharpe said.

“When the driver saw the marked police cars following him, he made the decision to flee in the vehicle trying to evade the police,” Sharpe said.

Police chased the car, a two-door white Honda, through Cathedral City and Palm Springs for about 10 minutes. The vehicle got onto eastbound Interstate 10 at Gene Autry Trail, where the pursuit reached speeds of 105 mph,
Sharpe said.

“Due to the excess speed and traffic conditions, the officers felt the pursuit was becoming a safety issue and they elected to discontinue the pursuit at Cook Street,” Sharpe said.

A witness reported seeing a passenger throw a sawed-off shotgun out the window onto the freeway east of Gene Autry. Officers found a sawed off 12-gauge shotgun when they went back to search the area, Sharpe said.

The suspects and the vehicle were still at-large this afternoon; there were probably two or three people in the car, Sharpe said. No description was given of the suspects.

Anyone with information was asked call Cathedral City police at 760-770-0300.
