Crash near Cathedral City injures motorist

A motorist suffered major injuries early today when his vehicle crashed into a utility pole, snarling traffic on Varner Road for more than six hours, the California Highway Patrol said.

The extent of the the man’s injuries was not immediately known, but officials report he was taken to an area hospital following the 5:45 a.m. accident.

The solo vehicle crash occurred on Varner Road east of Palm Date Drive near Bob Hope Drive.

It was unclear whether the driver was wearing seat belts or if alcohol played a role in the crash, officials said.

The man was alone in the vehicle, Highway Patrol authorities reported.

SoCal Edison workers were expected to repair the damaged utility pole, officials said.
