A fire broke out today in the Santa Ana River bottom in Riverside, expanding into thick brush but not immediately threatening any homes or other structures.
The non-injury blaze was reported around 11 a.m. near Old Ranch Road and Rubidoux Avenue, in the vicinity of Anza Narrows Park, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
Crews from the city and county staged in the park, attempting to reach the flames. Air support was not immediately available because of another wildfire in San Jacinto.
Smoke billowed above the city and was detectable throughout the downtown area and in neighboring Jurupa Valley.
The size and cause of the fire could not immediately be confirmed.
