A civilian died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound today at Memorial Golf Course on the grounds of Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps reported.
Military medics pronounced the man dead at the scene of the shooting shortly after 10:30 a.m., according to a statement from the northern San Diego County USMC installation.
His name was withheld pending family notification.
It was not immediately clear what might have led to the gunfire.
The golf course, which is open to the public as well as active-duty personnel, was closed pending further notice, Marine Corps Capt. Barry Edwards said.
The death was being investigated by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the captain said.
