Updated: Fire breaks out in garage of home in Lake Elsinore

Updated @ 5:50 p.m.: According to an updated Riverside Count Fire Department report, the fire was contained at approximately 4:04 p.m.

“The garage fully collapsed with three vehicles inside that were completely destroyed, but due to quick firefighter action there was only a slight extension into the structure,” according to Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson.

One civilian was transported via ground ambulance to an area hospital for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Original: Firefighters responded to report of a fire today in the 32400 block Somerset Drive in Lake Elsinore, it was reported.

First reported at 3:23 p.m., the blaze began in the garage of a two-story single family dwelling, according to a Riverside County Fire Department report.

Resident Sean Kurtz, 43, watched as his neighbor attempted to douse the fire with a garden hose.

“I came out of my house and I saw a big plume of smoke coming out of the neighbor’s garage and he was standing in the garage with a hose,” Kurtz said.

Kurtz said his neighbor called to him that he did not know what was on fire.

“Lucky for us, the fire department got here real fast. It’s amazing how much heat comes off a fire at just 20-30 feet away. I’m just glad the fire department showed up as quick as they did,” Kurtz said.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to fire officials.
