An older man sustained second-degree burns on his hands and feet when matches ignited some laundry and a chair at a senior condominium complex in Rancho Mirage today.
The fire was reported about 4:15 p.m. at a seven-story complex in the 800 block of Island Drive. Riverside County sheriff’s deputies put the fire out before firefighters arrived, and the blaze didn’t reach the rest of the condo where it started or surrounding units, Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson said.
The older man was transported by helicopter to an area burn center for treatment. Investigators said the fire was caused by “accidental use” of matches, Hendrickson said.
The fire caused an estimated $1,000 in damage, she said.
