A Lamborghini speeding above 100 miles per hour smashed into the median and exploded in flames on Interstate 15 in North County, CHP officers said today.
The driver was a 35-year-old San Marcos man, and CHP officers said he had possibly been drinking alcohol before the 11:20 p.m. crash.
Among other major injuries, his face was burned and he was evacuated in a helicopter to the UC San Diego Medical Center, CHP officers said.
The 2008 Lamborghini’s driver was headed north on Interstate 15 north of Mission Road near Fallbrook at more than 100 miles per hour when the car drifted from the right lane into the center median, according to CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt.
The crash cut the car in half and it caught fire. The driver sustained injuries including burns to his face, Bettencourt said.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 15 were shut down for about 20 minutes following the crash, Bettencourt said.
The driver’s name was not released.

20 minutes! The northbound side was at a standstill for over an hour!!
You got that right Melissa. I live on the hill just above the scene of the accident and I was still seeing traffic backed up until 2am. I only wish they would publish the article on the front page of every local newspaper so that SOMEBODY might see the results of drinking……and speeding and think before getting behind the wheel of their super fast car……….!! Horrible, Horrible, really horrible!
