The crash was reported shortly after 7 a.m. on the westbound Ramona Expressway about a mile and a half west of Lyon Avenue.

“A vehicle was travelling westbound on the Ramona Expressway and swerved to avoid hitting a dog that was in lanes,” Riverside County sheriff’s Cpl. Angel Ramos said. “The car then crossed over the center median and struck a car going eastbound.”

Cpl. Ramos added that one person died at the scene and the other driver was transported to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries.

Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department said one of the vehicles was a motorcycle.

The person killed was not immediately identified by the coroner’s office.

Cpl. Ramos advises drivers to put their safety first if they find themselves dealing with an object or animal in traffic lanes.

“Depending on how fast you are travelling try to maneuver around the object if possible,” he explained. “If you can’t safely avoid a roadway hazard and pull over, keep driving straight ahead.”
