The officer attempted to pull over a 2007 Nissan truck just before 3 p.m., however, when the officer switched on his emergency lights, the driver sped off.

The truck sped south on Camino Los Banos ultimately crashing into another vehicle in an intersection at Shaver Street in Hemet.

According to a Riverside County sheriff’s released statement, the driver exited the disabled truck and pointed a gun at the officer. The officer fired his weapon at the suspect who then threw a small explosive device into the yard of a nearby home.

After a small explosion, the suspect identified as Hemet resident Jesus Emiliano Almanza, 35, surrendered and was taken into custody.

Neither the officer or Almanza sustained injuries in the incident, Deputy Albert Martinez stated.

“Responding units including additional CHP, San Jacinto Police Department, Hemet Police Department, Hemet Sheriff’s station arrived and took the remaining occupants of the Nissan into custody,” Deputy Martinez added.

Due to the use of an explosive device, the Riverside Sheriff’s Hazardous Device Team responded in order to determine if there were additional explosive devices in the vehicle.

The female driver of the other vehicle complained of pain due to the accident and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Almanza was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on charges of assault upon a peace officer. Additional charges are anticipated, officials reported.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is conducting this investigation into the officer involved shooting. The name of the California Highway Patrol officer is being withheld at this time.

Anyone with additional details regarding this ongoing investigation is urged to contact Investigator Josh Button at 951-955-2777 or Investigator Chris Burden at 951-791-3400.

Another great example of how and why our cities should come together and assist each other!! I drove by this…right after it happen, to pick daughter up from school. Seeing the timeline here I know they were quick with back up and closed off the street from a great distance. What dumb idiots this guy is and his friends to participate and not stop him. I pray that girl is ok.
