Among the scheduled speakers is Ginny Scharbarth, the mother of Kathleen Scharbarth, a Carlsbad woman who died at the hands of her ex-boyfriend last year. Her killer hanged himself in jail in March.

According to the San Diego Domestic Violence Council, which is organizing the event, 24 people were killed in the county last year in domestic violence crimes, 17 by a former husband or boyfriend. Seven other people, including five children, were also slain during those incidents, the council said.

The event will also include remarks from District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and other civic officials, a ceremony to remember the victims, and resource booths.

The event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the park near Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street.
