Hemet: Lost hiker rescued with help of cell phone

A man who got lost during a day hike along South Ridge Trailhead was found safe and unharmed, a sheriff’s sergeant reported today.

Members of the Riverside Mountain Rescue team escorted the lost hiker back to his camp site after the pilot of a sheriff’s helicopter spotted him Saturday, said Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Sargent.

The unidentified man, 60, kept in contact with sheriff’s deputies via his cellular phone, Sargent said. Deputies received a 3:04 p.m. call about the lost hiker, and he was found more than three hours later, the sergeant said.

The hiker refused medical attention, Sargent said.
