The officer-involved shooting near C Street and 4th Avenue occurred about 1:30 a.m., according to Chula Vista police.

The patrolman was responding to a report of an armed robbery at a CVS Pharmacy when he spotted the suspect near the business, police said.

The suspect allegedly opened fire on the patrolman, prompting the officer to return fire. Medics took the suspect to an area hospital, where his condition was not immediately reported.

The officer was not wounded.

It was a “pretty traumatic event” but the officer involved was doing fine, Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Wedge said.

Fourth Avenue from C to D streets, and C Street from 5th Avenue to North Glover, were expected to be closed until 11 a.m. while evidence from the shooting was being collected, according to Wedge.
