Officers from the Coachella Police Department responded to a call regarding a stolen truck that had been abandoned in a field near Frederick Street near Avenue 52.

As one officer was scouring the area, he located the suspects in a nearby neighborhood at Primitivo Drive and Rodrejo Street, Sgt. Mike Tapp stated in a sheriff’s press release.

“As the officer attempted to detain the suspects at gunpoint, his firearm discharged,” Sgt. Tapp added.

According to officials, none of the suspects were injured and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate the cause of the discharge.

The two 16-year-old juveniles were arrested and booked into the Indio Juvenile Hall on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle.

Anyone with further details regarding this case is urged to contact the Thermal Station Investigators at 760-863-8990.
