A restaurateur being held in lieu of $4 million bail on suspicion of trying four times to kill his then-girlfriend’s unborn baby with a drug that can be used to terminate pregnancies is scheduled to appear today at a hearing at which his attorney is likely to argue for bail reduction.
Joshua Woodward, 40, surrendered Wednesday morning in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom in connection with four counts of attempted murder filed against him on Tuesday. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
The Florida resident — who co-owned the former Table 8 restaurant in Los Angeles — is accused of trying to induce his girlfriend to have a miscarriage via the use of misoprostol, whose uses include inducing labor and terminating early-stage pregnancies, prosecutors said.
The criminal complaint alleges that Woodward tried to kill “Baby Doe” on four separate occasions — between Sept. 15 and Oct. 16, 2009, and on Oct.
17, Oct. 18 and Oct. 25 of that year.
The charges come nearly three years after Los Angeles police announced that they were investigating the “suspicious circumstances of a miscarriage”
involving the woman, who had been about 13 weeks pregnant.
Woodward — whose bail was set at $4 million — is due back this afternoon at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse for a bail hearing.
