A suspicious package observed today behind a local business brought out deputies from the Jurupa Valley/Norco office, it was reported.

According to a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department report, police responded to a report of a suspicious package at about noon on Thursday in the 1100 block of Hamner Ave. in Norco.

“Upon arrival, deputies located the package inside the business near the cash registers. Based on the appearance and the location of the package, it was treated as a possible explosive device,” the report said.

Ensuring the safety of residents and local shoppers, several businesses were evacuated and Hamner Ave. was closed from 1st Street to Hidden Valley Parkway for about two hours, officials said.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Hazardous Device Team arrived at the scene, removed the package from the business and determined it was not an explosive device.

The affected local businesses were then re-opened to the public.
