Los Angeles: Man attacks brother with a machete

A couple was in custody this morning on suspicion of attempted murder after the man attacked his brother with a machete and barricaded himself in his South Los Angeles apartment with his wife until early this morning, police said.

“It started as a landlord-tenant dispute,” Los Angeles police Sgt. Alex Baez said of the altercation at the apartment at 57th Street and McKinley Avenue between two brothers and their wives. “Then one brother pulled a machete on the other and swung at his head, causing a minor laceration,” he said.

The man with the machete grabbed his own wife by the hair and pulled her into the apartment, leading to a two-hour standoff, the sergeant said.

When they surrendered without incident, both were booked for attempted murder, police said. They were identified as Marcos Ayala, 40, and Yaysi
Martinez, 32, Baez said.

Their two children, ages 12 and 7, were taken into protective custody.
