Seven high school seniors from the Lake Elsinore Unified School District were recently honored by the Student of the Month program, under the auspices of the Lake Elsinore Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Elsinore Sizzler Restaurant. Students are individually selected by teachers and school staff for their character, love of learning, leadership, community service, and their ability to persevere through challenging circumstances.

‘Student of the Month’ Honorees:
ELSINORE HIGH SCHOOL
Sasha Conaway has selected UCLA as her first choice in colleges. Her goals include a career in graphic design and writing. She is a valedictorian candidate with interests in illustrating and writing stories, and Irish dancing. The biggest lessons she has learned in high school are: don’t be afraid of giving a 110 percent effort when you have self doubts, and never give up.
Gabriel Vega has led an active high school career, including sports, cross country, soccer school and editing the school newspaper. His top college picks include Berkeley or Cal Poly. He wants to study mechanical engineering. His advice to other students: be willing to go above and beyond, you’ll be rewarded in many ways.
LAKESIDE HIGH SCHOOL
Delila Carter plans to apply to Stanford, Davis, and UC Irvine. Her goals include a career in Pediatrics. She has been involved in the Rotary Interact Club and AVID. She advises students not to fear failure in trying new things, because new experiences can lead to new opportunities and self discovery.
Dakota Wilson watched a successful older sibling and wondered if he could be as successful. Today, Dakota is as successful a student as any. He plans to attend UCLA, with an interest in firefighting. His school involvement includes varsity football, basketball, baseball, and AVID. Teachers call him a Renaissance man, because of his passion for knowledge and dedication to personal growth.
TEMESCAL CANYON HIGH SCHOOL
Brianna Collingwood will attend a private university, either Azusa or Biola, to major in English and minor in Religious Studies. Her school involvement includes drama, mock trial, and leading the drama club. Her grandparents have raised her to be active in school, church and the community. She is a “light” to others who know her story. Her life lesson is not to be a victim of circumstances over which you have no control; she exemplifies compassion for others and servant leadership-ideal qualities for her chosen career path.
Nicolas Fadgen aspires to become a CEO with the gravitas to make a difference in a big way. His college aim is attending either Berkeley in the West or NYU in the East. He is viewed as an excellent leader and event planner through his service to ASB, while holding top grades as a valedictorian candidate. His lesson learned in high school is to ‘be who you are and to be accepting of others.’
KEITH MCCARTHY ACADEMY
Karla Cabrera exemplifies the alternative education success story. She will attend MSJC to pursue a career in Pediatrics. She is on the way to becoming the first in her family to earn a high school diploma. She has distinguished herself as a reliable and hard worker, one whom other students look up to.
