Providing a healthy, take-home meal is easier now than ever before, thanks to restaurateurs and cousins Clive and Brandon Barwin.
No strangers to commuter traffic, these businessmen put their heads together with an idea that has become Temecula’s new Bushfire Grill.
SWRNN.com stopped by to inhale the freshly grilled flavors, chat with Brandon Barwin and discover just why the new Bushfire Grill is the talk of the town.
Q: What brought you (both) to the Temecula area?
A: I was moving my family from Vancouver Canada to Southern California and, after researching where to live, found Temecula to be a great family-oriented community with great schools. Clive resides in San Diego.
Q: What gave you all the idea for a take-home healthy eatery?
A: When I first moved to Temecula, I was commuting to Los Angeles and San Diego for the business and realized that after the long commute there were very few choices available for picking up a healthy dinner to take home to my family.
Q: What can diners expect when entering Bushfire Grill?
A: The first thing you notice is a rustic, homey feel and it becomes a true experience for the senses with the home-style food and the way it looks and smells and is presented, the friendliness of the staff.
Q: The name Bushfire brings Australia to mind. What is the story behind the name?
A: Although originally from South Africa, my cousin Clive spent many years in Australia and immigrated to Southern California from there. He was inspired by similar restaurants, and knew it would be something unique here. We serve American food, but with an international spin. Flavors from Australia, South Africa, and Canada all influence the menu.
Q: How do you develop your ideas for such unique spins on side dishes, such as the gourmet mac & cheese?
A: We start with time honored recipes, do lots of research and taste testing, with the result being a menu item we are proud to serve our guests.
Q: What is the best part of working with local growers and suppliers?
A: The best part? Knowing we are supporting our local community. When you do business with someone locally and find out things like our kids go to the same school together, rewarding and personal relationships are developed.
Q: How has your experience been starting a new business in Temecula?
A: It’s no secret that it can be a challenge to do business in California, but we found that everyone we dealt with during opening and after was very supportive and went the extra mile for us, and we continue to appreciate that. The city of Temecula was great and the health department was one of the best I’ve ever worked with. They were helpful, proactive, gave us great advice and actually saved us money.
Q: There is a proposition out there for better food labeling. Why is this so important to know what’s in the food that you are serving?
A: We feel that people have the right to know exactly where their food comes from and what is in it, so they can make informed choices for themselves and their families. We feel that being transparent is the best way to go.
Q: What are the favorite menu items people are ordering?
A: I think our customers are pleasantly surprised that great tasting, great quality, healthy food can also be affordable, and that they can feed their kids something that’s good for them without breaking their budget. At lunch our most popular items are the Free Range Chicken Bowls and the Focaccia Sandwiches. At dinner, it’s the Free Range Chicken with our Peri Peri Sauce, and also the braises, now that it’s officially fall.
Q: Anything extra you’d like to add?
A: We’re proud to be a part of the Temecula community and thank all our guests and family for their support. We hope to be serving you from this location for many years to come!
