A 50-year-old San Jacinto woman died today in a two-car crash near Gilman Hot Springs, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The crash was reported about 4:45 a.m. on Gilman Springs Road east of Highway 79 and west of Sublette Road.
The woman was driving a PT Cruiser west on Gilman Springs when she lost control at a curve and veered into the eastbound lane and into the path of a Kia Rondo driven by 31-year-old Madelene Mitcalf of San Jacinto.
The Kia crashed into the passenger side of the PT Cruiser, and the woman, whose name hadn’t been released by the coroner’s office, was pronounced deceased at the scene, CHP Officer Darren Meyer said.
Mitcalf was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
Alcohol and drugs weren’t determined to be a factor in the crash, Meyer said.
“The roadway was wet at the time of the collision and the tire tread on the PT Cruiser was very poor,” he said.
The CHP closed Gilman Springs Road in both directions.
