A scuffle between a pair of Palms Springs bicycle police officers and a motorist at bar-closing time turned deadly today, as the man was shot and killed.
Detectives and investigators were still gathering evidence at midday following the shooting inside a downtown parking garage, which happened at 1:59 a.m. The name of the dead man was not immediately released.
Palm Springs Police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff said the officers were on bikes, checking the garage at 275 South Indian Canyon Drive as nearby bars were closing. That’s when some sort of disturbance broke out between people in two separate cars, which caught the officers’ attention.
They dismounted from their bikes and spoke to one of the drivers and a scuffle broke out, Kovaleff said. It was not clear if the suspect was inside or outside the vehicle, or whose gun was fired.
A male passenger in the driver’s car was not hurt, but was detained as investigators are reviewing if he had any role in the disturbance, Kovaleff said.
An autopsy, toxicology reports and interviews with witnesses and the officers involved were pending as the investigation continued at midday, Kovaleff said.
The three-story municipal parking garage is in the heart of the Palm Springs entertainment district, near Palm Canyon Drive at Baristo Road.
