Fiery Palm Springs crash fatal to motorist

The driver of a luxury sedan burned to death early today when the car slammed into a palm tree and burst into flames, a police sergeant said.

It was too early to say whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the predawn fatal crash that involved a 2003 Infinity G35, Palm Springs Police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff said, as the investigation was under way.

Firefighters got a call at 2:40 a.m. about the fiery wreck that erupted in the 2500 block of Toledo Avenue, Kovaleff said. Once the flames were doused, firefighters determined that one person was inside, the sergeant added.

No identity was immediately released, and firefighters did not find any passenger.

Police believe that the sedan had been heading south on Toledo Avenue and plowed into the palm tree on the west side of the street.

Police shut down Toledo Avenue between Murray Canyon Drive and Via Estrella to collect evidence, Kovaleff said.
