Two would-be thieves tried to cut open an automated teller machine in Carlsbad early today but got away empty-handed, police said.

The attempted burglary at the Chase Bank branch office at 2219 Palomar Airport Road was reported at 1:52 a.m., according to Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain.

Two suspects used cutting tools in an attempt to open the ATM located outside the bank, but they abandoned their efforts and fled empty-handed in a red Ford pickup, the lieutenant said in a statement.

The ATM was damaged but there was no monetary loss, he said, noting the pickup and a cutting torch were found abandoned nearby a short time later.
