The two men became lost on Wednesday Nov. 14 on the Art Smith Trail between Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage.

The men embarked on their ride in the morning near the Cathedral City Cove, Sgt. Dan Devinny stated in a sheriff’s report. He added the men had planned to ride the trail to where it ended in south Palm Desert near Highway 74.

After leaving the trail, the bikers became lost and called for help.

“The Sheriff Department’s Desert Search and Rescue was activated and the Sheriff’s helicopter responded,” Sgt. Devinny said.

He explained the helicopter located the men with the help of a fire they made at about 5 p.m.

Both men were uninjured and airlifted along with their bikes to safety.

“The Palm Desert Police encourages hikers to carefully plan their hikes and to take plenty of food, water and adequate clothing, especially during this time of year,” Sgt. Devinny said
