SeaWorld San Diego kicks off its holiday celebrations today — one week before Thanksgiving — by conducting the annual lighting of its 320-foot-tall Skytower.

The lights on the Skytower are set to be turned on around 6 p.m. by four patients from Rady Children’s Hospital in an event that will feature costumed characters, cupcakes and hot chocolate.

The lit-up Skytower has been a community staple for 43 years, visible across a wide swath of Mission Valley, Mission Bay, La Jolla, downtown and Old Town.

According to SeaWorld, the display includes 24 strands of lights, each holding 81 bulbs. Other holiday events at the theme park, such as a snow play area, a special Shamu show and Santa’s Cottage, begin Saturday.
