Suspects arrested for pointing laser at a sheriff’s helicopter in Moreno Valley

A laser being pointed at a Riverside County Sheriff’s helicopter resulted in the arrest of three men at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16 in Moreno Valley, officials confirmed today.

The helicopter was flying over the 2200 block of Bay Avenue when a hand-held laser was pointed at the helicopter crew.

“The helicopter crew was able to direct officers to a residence on Bay Avenue from where the laser was originating,” Sgt. Bill Guimont said in a sheriff’s report.

Officers arrived at the home and detained Rudy Giron, 26, Fernando Soto, 21, and Moise Estevez-Ayala, 20.

All three suspects were arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center.

Sgt. Guimont added that lasers pointed at helicopters can temporarily blind the pilot and distract flight crews, putting the entire crew and citizens at risk.

Anyone with further details regarding this crime is urged to contact Sgt. Lingo with the Moreno Valley Police Department at 951-247-8700.
