The Date Palm Drive bridge over the Interstate 10 freeway will be renamed in honor of a California Highway Patrol officer who died nearly 25 years ago while on duty, according to CHP officials.
The ceremony will be held Nov. 26, the day CHP Officer Mark Taylor died in 1987 along the eastbound side of the often busy freeway when he was struck by a moving vehicle while making a routine traffic stop.
The fatal incident happened west of the Date Palm Drive over crossing, a written CHP statement said.
The ceremony, open to the public, will take place at 11 a.m. at the CHP’s Indio Area Office, located at 79-650 Varner Road.
