The robbery was reported about 4:40 a.m. at the Target store at 78-935 Highway 111.

Louis Ivan Fuentes, 19, Joseph Vega, 18, and Marvin Amezquita, 22, were later arrested at a gas station on Country Club Drive and Washington Street in Palm Desert, sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Bishop said.

Store security working the Black Friday shopping event had tried to detain three people involved in stealing merchandise, Bishop said.

“As loss prevention agents attempted to arrest the suspects outside the store, one of the suspects displayed a non-lethal weapon,” Bishop said.

“Just prior to the suspects fleeing in a black Ford Explorer, one suspect also claimed to possess a firearm.”

Authorities found the SUV at the gas station in Palm Desert and detained five people inside the vehicle. Two people were questioned and released, and the other three occupants were identified as suspects in the robbery and arrested, Bishop said.

The three men were booked at the county jail in Indio — Fuentes was being held on $30,000 bail and Vega and Amezquita on $5,000 bail each.

They were expected to be arraigned Wednesday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, according to jail records.
