The incident, which was first reported at 6:09 p.m., took place in the eastbound lanes of Highway 74 near Meadowbrook Ave., according to a Riverside County Fire Department report.

“We had a male, 48 years old on Meadowbrook Ave., crossing against a red light. According to witnesses, (two) vehicles traveling eastbound had the the green light,” said California Highway Patrol officer Christopher Young.

Young said that a motorist driving in the number one lane observed the man attempting to cross in the crosswalk and slowed down.

However, the vehicle in the number two lane, a Chevy 3500 truck, swerved and unsuccessfully attempted to brake hard to avoid the man, knocking him into the roadway.

“The (pedestrian) did not have the pedestrian right of way, according to witness statements,” Young said.

The man, who was not identified, perished at the scene.

Young said he did not believe that alcohol or drugs was a factor in the crash, however, the investigation is on-going.

The driver of the Chevy truck, approximately 25 years-old, was accompanied home by officers from the trauma team.

I drove by a minute after this happened. :( … The driver of the truck stopped. People don’t these days. Thank goodness. My prayers for the family of the driver. It was not the drive s fault which was clear. But I feel bad they have to be in this situation. And prayers for the pedestrians family. :(
