A woman suspected of drunken driving remains jailed today, as a Coachella resident was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle whose driver fled.
Celia Miranda, 63, was fatally injured as she was crossing Avenue 49 in Perris at 5:11 p.m. Saturday, Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Juan Zamora said.
Sara Valencia Rojas, 31, was suspected of fleeing the scene, but sheriff’s deputies found her a short time later in the area of Harrison and Sixth streets in Coachella, Zamora said.
She was arrested for suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit and run driving resulting in death, according to online jail records.
She remained behind bars in lieu of $75,000 bail with a court appearance set for Wednesday.
Miranda died of her injuries at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio nearly an hour after the alleged hit and run crash, the coroner’s office reported.

This story doesn’t add up. The headline says the victim was from Perris, then the story says she was crossing Avenue 49 in Perris. There is no Ave 49 in Perris. Then it says the person who allegedly hit her was caught “a short time later” in Coachella. Coachella is a 90 min to 2 hr drive from Perris. Most people wouldn’t consider this trip to be “short.” And if the unfortunate victim was injured in Perris, why was she taken to a hospital in Indio?
It is not safe to cross any streets in Perris.
The story says the woman is from Perris, but the guy who hit her was found “a short time later” in Coachella. She was taken to a hospital in Indio! Coachella and Indio are 90 min to 2 hrs from Perris, and there’s no Ave 49 in Perris. The story doesn’t make sense.
