Small quake rumbles through the Southland

A 2.6 magnitude earthquake shook the San Pedro Channel, automated seismographs reported today.

The small quake was epicentered 8 miles northeast of Avalon at 8:31 p.m. Saturday. That would be 26 miles south of Long Beach and 43 miles south of the Los Angeles Civic Center.

USGS seismographs indicated that the quake was very shallow.
