A Covina man who became lost while hiking near the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway was found safe by rescuers just before 10 a.m. on Monday Nov. 26 after spending the night in the wilderness, officials confirmed today.
Family members alerted law enforcement that Louis E. Perez may be in distress after he failed to return home from his hiking trip.
The Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit was able to determine Perez’ location thanks to his cellular phone.
A Riverside County Sheriff’s helicopter was dispatched and pinpointed the lost hiker near the Black Mountain Campgrounds, Sgt. Anthony Williams stated in a sheriff’s report
Sheriff’s deputies escorted Perez back to his car at the Cactus to Clouds trailhead, Williams added.
Perez was reported to be in good spirits and did not sustain any injuries.
“The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind hiking enthusiasts to carry proper equipment for any outdoor excursion,” Williams said.
Officials added proper preparedness includes a detailed travel plan shared with relatives and friends as well as knowledge of common hiking equipment.
