A Palm Springs man suspected of rear-ending a patrol car while driving drunk was out on bail today.
Gareth Renato Delacruz, 30, was arrested shortly after 3:30 a.m. Sunday on Vista Chino east of Whitewater Club Drive in Palm Springs. A Palm Springs police officer had responded to a report of an injured dog there about half an hour earlier and had turned on his car’s emergency flashers while he tended to the dog in front of the car, according to Sgt. Mike Kovaleff.
“The officer heard the sounds of a collision and observed that a black 2006 Honda Civic, traveling eastbound on Vista Chino, had rear-ended the stopped patrol car,” Kovaleff said.
The crash caused minor damage to both cars, but no one was hurt. Delacruz, who was driving the Honda with two other people inside, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and transported to the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
He posted a $2,500 bond on Monday and was expected to be arraigned on Jan. 24 at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, according to jail records.
The injured dog was taken to a nearby veterinary hospital, Kovaleff said.
