A stretch of Highway 111 near Mecca and the Salton Sea will be closed in both directions next week while crews replace an old bridge and upgrade a drainage system, according to Caltrans.
Highway 111 on the east side of the Salton Sea between Mecca and Niland will be closed from Dec. 7 at 7 a.m. to Dec. 11 at 7 a.m.
Traffic will be detoured onto State Route 86 on the west side of the Salton Sea. Bombay Beach-area residents, business owners and customers can use Highway 111 north to and from Mecca, according to Caltrans.
The project, costing an estimated $1 million, will include the demolition and removal of a 65-year-old bridge and building the highway over box culverts that were installed in October.
