Bicyclist struck, killed in Palm Springs

A bicyclist was struck by a car and killed in Palm Springs, police said today.

The male bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which was reported shortly after 9 p.m. Friday, Palm Springs police Sgt. Melissa Desmarais said in a statement.

Police rushed to South Palm Canyon Drive near Avenida Palmera, where they learned a Ford Thunderbird had struck the bicyclist. The vehicle had been traveling south towards the curve at East Palm Canyon Drive, but police would not disclose what the bicyclist had been doing just before the crash.

The bicyclist’s name was withheld pending family notification. No arrests were made as police determined that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the fatal collision, Desmarais said.
