Hiker collapses and dies in the Coachella Valley Preserve

A hiker found unconscious on the Pushwalla Trail in the Coachella Valley Preserve died shortly after he was flown to a hospital, the Riverside County coroner’s office reported today.

The hiker was identified as Avner Bethalakhmi, 61, of Palm Desert.

Riverside County Fire Department dispatchers received a call at 12:09 p.m. Sunday reporting that a man had collapsed while hiking,said department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

A Riverside Fire Department paramedic performed CPR on the man while he was being flown to a hospital in a California Highway Patrol helicopter, Hagemann said.

He was pronounced dead at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage at 1:33 p.m., according to the coroner.

The exact cause of death was not released.
