Congressman-elect Raul Ruiz, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and other local officials will tour the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge today, Boxer’s office announced.
Officials also will “discuss the urgent need to restore the Salton Sea,” according to a statement from Boxer’s office.
The tour will start at 2:15 p.m. at Red Hill Marina in Calipatria.
Other officials slated to attend are state Assemblyman V. Manuel Perez, D-Coachella, Assistant Secretary of Interior for Water and Science Anne Castle, Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Michael Connor, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Commander Col. Mark Toy and officials from the Salton Sea Authority.
“I am excited that Secretary Salazar is traveling here to see the Salton Sea firsthand,” said Ruiz, D-Coachella. “Restoring the sea is critical to the health and well-being of our community and the economic and environmental security of our region. We need everyone at the table, and the secretary’s visit is an enormous step in the right direction.”
Last month, Ruiz beat 14-year incumbent Republican Rep. Mary Bono Mack for her 36th Congressional District seat.
