7-Eleven in Cathedral City robbed at knifepoint for lottery tickets

Two men were arrested today on suspicion of stealing lottery tickets at knifepoint from a convenience store in Cathedral City, a police sergeant said.

The robbery was reported at 5:25 a.m. at a 7-Eleven in the 67500 block of Ramon Road. Two men wearing hoodies threatened the clerk with a knife, took the store’s Scratcher lottery tickets and jumped into a getaway car, Cathedral City police Sgt. Corwin de Veas said.

Later in the morning, Riverside County sheriff’s deputies stopped a Honda Accord for vehicle code violations and found stolen lottery tickets in the car, the sergeant said. The occupants were detained until Cathedral City police officers arrived, he said.

The knife believed used in the holdup was also found, and surveillance video of the suspects matched the description of the men in the car, identified as Daron Ellis Hill, 19, of Indio and Christopher Simon Hernandez, 19, of Palm Springs, de Veas said.

Hill and Hernandez are also suspected or robbing another convenience store in Palm Desert in November, the sergeant said.

Hernandez has “numerous” arrests for alleged burglaries, assaults and weapons crimes and was on probation for an armed robbery, he said.
