A motorist was injured today when her car went off the road and plunged down a 100-foot embankment near Idyllwild, officials reported.
The accident happened about 8:45 a.m. on state Route 243, near Stonewood Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver, identified as 67-year-old Edythe Belcher, was driving southbound on 243 when she hit a patch of ice, lost control of her vehicle and veered off the road.
Belcher was trapped for almost an hour in her overturned SUV until a CalTrans worker noticed disturbed dirt on the side of the road and called for help.
A Riverside County fire crew got her into an ambulance, which transported her to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment of injuries including a leg laceration.
As of 11 a.m., the southbound side of the highway remained closed as authorities retrieved the car and conducted an investigation.
The northbound side was open, with CHP officers directing traffic going both directions through the area.
