Palm Springs: Suspected car thief in custody

A Palm Springs man suspected of driving a stolen car in Palm Springs was behind bars today.

Damian De Los Santos, 19, was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of Desert View Drive.

Someone reported a possible burglary at 6:10 p.m. in that area. Police were told that three people were seen there in a black Honda Accord, and they found the car parked nearby, according to Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff.

The vehicle identification number matched that of a 1993 Accord that was reported stolen in Palm Springs on Dec. 15, according to Kovaleff.

De Los Santos was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and for violating the terms of his probation and booked at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning. He was being held on $25,000 bail and was expected to be arraigned on Dec. 26, according to jail records.

One passenger — Daniel Knott, 19, of Palm Springs — allegedly had burglary tools. He was arrested and transported to the Smith Correctional Facility, then released after being issued a misdemeanor citation. The other passenger, whose name wasn’t released, was let go after it was determined he couldn’t be held criminally liable.

The burglary report couldn’t be substantiated, Kovaleff said.
