A San Diego Police Department officer was hit by a car driven by a suspected drunken driver, was trapped for 45 minutes in the wreckage, and was hospitalized in serious condition today.

Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Amos said the crash was at 2 a.m.

“The SDPD officer had just dropped off a prisoner at Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility and was on Mission Gorge Road when he got T-boned by another driver” who had exited northbound State Route 125, Amos said.

Responding firefighters using the jaws of life took about 45 minutes to extract the stricken officer from his crumpled vehicle by cutting through its roof.

Amos said the officer sustained broken bones and other serious injuries, and was transported to a nearby hospital for surgery.

His name was not released.

The suspect was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving and his identity was initially not released.
